چکیده

Abstract Golden jackals ( Canis aureus ) display a complex repertoire of calls, utilized in different communication types (e.g., marking territories, attraction mating partners). Resident golden jackal groups can successfully be detected by active bioacoustic stimulation, as well with passive recording devices. For monitoring, basic knowledge the calls focal species and potential restrictions strengths monitoring devices should considered. We therefore tested possible applications low-budget autonomous unit for examined following research questions: How far group detected? Can distance to device estimated? To answer these questions, we placed 11 AudioMoth linear transect record live imitated replayed howls. estimation number responding animals, howling individuals was determined based on maximum simultaneously visible fundamental frequencies spectrogram. predict playback howls devices, relative sound level (RSL) each call measured fitted models. Reliable estimations using RSL were up 400 m. Estimated animals showed negative relationship distance. Our results present baseline future studies show that AudioMoths helpful asset packs—both but also monitoring.

Daytime cover, diet and space-use of golden jackals (Canis aureus) in agro-ecosystems of Bangladesh

Golden jackals are locally common in Bangladesh despite intensive cultivation and high human densities. We studied the relative importance of seasonal flooding, rodent prey-base, and daytime cover on the occurrence of golden jackals in the two major agro-ecosystems in Bangladesh, one with annual monsoon flooding and the other without. Jackals were less common throughout the year where floodwate...

Survey of Golden Jackals (canis Aureus L.) in Northern Dalmatia, Croatia: Preliminary Results

Preliminary results from the survey of golden jackals (Canis aureus) in Northern Dalmatia are presented. We used broadcasted jackal howls and monitored the response to determine the presence of jackal territorial groups. 19 jackal territorial groups were recorded in the NW part of Ravni kotari and 2 on Vir Island. The presence of territorial jackals on Pag Island could not be confirmed. For Rav...

A European Concern? Genetic Structure and Expansion of Golden Jackals (Canis aureus) in Europe and the Caucasus

In the first continent-wide study of the golden jackal (Canis aureus), we characterised its population genetic structure and attempted to identify the origin of European populations. This provided a unique insight into genetic characteristics of a native carnivore population with rapid large-scale expansion. We analysed 15 microsatellite markers and a 406 base-pair fragment of the mitochondrial...

Phylogeography of the Golden Jackal (Canis aureus) in India

The golden jackal (Canis aureus) is one of the most common and widely distributed carnivores in India but phylogeographic studies on the species have been limited across its range. Recent studies have observed absence of mitochondrial (mt) DNA diversity in European populations while some North African populations of golden jackal were found to carry gray wolf (Canis lupus lupaster) mtDNA lineag...

Leishmania tropica Infection in Golden Jackals and Red Foxes, Israel

During a survey of wild canids, internal transcribed spacer 1 real-time PCR and high-resolution melt analysis identified Leishmania tropica in samples from jackals and foxes. Infection was most prevalent in ear and spleen samples. Jackals and foxes may play a role in the spread of zoonotic L. tropica.
